Abstract
1. Of 16 cases of cyst like cavities on the X-Ray of the chest, the surgically resected
material showed by histo-pathological examination: bronchiectasis in 13 cases, bronchial
cyst in 3 cases including 1 case of lung sequestration.
2. Bronchiectasis usually involved whole lobes of one lung and had multiple cavities in
about 1/2 of the cases. One case of bronchial cysts. affected an entire lung with
multiple cysts. In the two other cases 1 or 2 cysts were located in lower lobe. The
sequestration was on single cysts in the posterior basal segment of right lower lobe.
3. Pathological tissue reaction surrounding the cavities and shrinkage of lung
preferably occurred in bronochiectasis.
4. The past history often suggests the etiology as most cases of bronchiectasis have
had previous bronchopulmonary disease, whereas this not the case in bronchial cysts.
5. Most cases of multiple cystic bronchiectasis with surrounding infiltration and
shrinkage had recurrent episodes of coughing, sputum and often fever as well. This was
not the case in the bronchial cysts.
